Paradox Interactive and White Wolf closes public feedback today, Friday 28 August, for the initial Vampire: The Masquerade alpha playtest following table runs at Gen Con in Indianapolis and digital distribution across Demiplane and DriveThruRPG. Creative Director Jess Lanzillo confirmed that survey data will shape the next iteration, Alpha 2.0, scheduled for release in September.

The studio has already made critical design choices before concluding the data review, cutting the experimental “[Drama]” metacurrency. Table testing revealed that using abstract point pools to adjust Storyteller pacing and non-player character difficulty interfered with existing horror systems like the Beast, Humanity, and Masquerade exposure.
Jess Lanzillo, Creative Director at World of Darkness, said a dev diary:
Horror tends to work on a ratchet, not a budget (think: the candles in Ten Candles only burn down, etc). The best part of Drama was the anxiety of the players increasing as the pile increased. But for me, as a Storyteller, it performed more like bookkeeping without a diegetic anchor. There are already a number of ways for the Storyteller to push this looming sense of dread on the players (Humanity, Masquerade ‘levels’, etc), so it’s a bit duplicative while also not providing the sense of play that similar approaches do in other systems.”
While the Drama token pool failed to support personal horror, early testing showed strong positive reactions to “[Maturing] Disciplines”. Paired with Blood Surge, the system allows players to push powers to higher tiers at an immediate cost, cutting cognitive load during character progression while keeping risk central to the mechanics. The development team is actively seeking community suggestions for a permanent name for the feature before the next draft.
The current playtest document outlines five core sections, covering character creation, clan disciplines, Humanity mechanics, and the basic rules of play. Players and Storytellers looking to influence the upcoming Alpha 2.0 revision must submit their short- and long-form feedback before the window closes tonight.
