Archives of Nethys stays official as Paizo trades commercial licence for informal deal

Paizo Inc. and Rose-Winds LLC have reached a new agreement to maintain Archives of Nethys as the official digital rules repository for Pathfinder and Starfinder. The announcement, made on 24 July 2026 by Jim Butler and Blake Davis, reverses a controversial decision from mid-July that severed the eight-year commercial partnership between the publisher and the volunteer-run archive.

Under the new terms, Archives of Nethys moves away from a traditional commercial licence to an informal, low-resource arrangement. This shift removes regular royalty reporting and administrative oversight for the Redmond, Washington publisher while keeping the rules repository free to access for the tabletop community. The site will also continue to host the legacy Pathfinder First Edition PRD.

What changes for the digital archive?

While the archive remains official, several operational updates take effect immediately:

• Artwork removal: Any images not covered by Paizo’s Community Use Policy must be removed from the site by the end of 24 July 2026. Paizo plans to expand the artwork available under the policy in the near future.
• Pre-release access: The volunteer team will receive advance game materials as digital PDFs on the same schedule as Paizo employees and freelance writers, rather than receiving full pre-print publisher files.
• Lore and text: Rules changes to lore and flavour text under the Community Use Policy are expected to be minimal.

Unresolved financial questions

The updated agreement focuses on operational stability, but it leaves key details from the original breakup unaddressed. Last week, Paizo stated that administrative overhead and uncollected commercial royalties contributed to ending the original contract.

The new informal setup eliminates royalty tracking going forward. However, neither Paizo nor Rose-Winds LLC confirmed whether outstanding fees from the previous eight-year agreement were paid, forgiven, or written off. The resolution trades commercial accounting requirements for community goodwill, allowing the volunteer group to focus purely on rules indexing.
