The latest trailer for Star City – the For All Mankind spinoff, telling the other side of the story from the Soviet Union’s perspective – has dropped by Apple TV, and it packs a PUNCH.
For All Mankind is now in its fifth season (with a sixth and final season on the way), so in a way it makes a lot of sense to retell the alt-history series but starting again at the very beginning from the other side of the story.
However, it won’t be a retelling that jumps quickly through the decades – it won’t even be a straight retelling at all; this show is completely its own beast.
Star City showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi recently chatted to iO9 about what that means. According to Wolpert: “This is not a show that jumps in time [like For All Mankind does] … it lives in the 1970s [as a] Cold War spy thriller behind the Iron Curtain.”
Nedivi added: “For us, the only reason to do a spin-off is if it feels like its own thing. It feels like you’re really adding a different element. So for us, this show is not only its own show; it’s its own genre. It’s a totally different look [and] feel.”
Sounds interesting to say the least, and that makes me curious. And here’s an official description for you:
Star City is a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race—when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program and the risks they all took to propel humankind forward.
The trailer looks pretty intense. Check it out below:
The first two episodes of Star City will be released on 29th May, followed by a weekly release schedule.
