Johan Nohr, the visionary artist behind the cult-hit MÖRK BORG, has returned to Kickstarter alongside Tania Herrero to launch Fomoria, a new subterranean folk horror roleplaying game. Published under the Free League Workshop sublabel, the project has already obliterated its modest £7,998 goal, amassing over £155,000 from nearly 2,000 backers in its opening days.
Set in the “earth’s dark womb,” Fomoria rejects the traditional dungeon crawl in favour of a shifting, sentient labyrinth known as the Strata. Players take on the roles of Folk, descendants of surface-dwellers who have never seen the sun, organised into clans and cabals to hunt eldritch horrors and survive the encroaching Red Plague. The setting emphasises a world where maps are unreliable, and the environment itself dreams in “stygian shades.”
The Fomoria roleplaying game utilises the MÖRK BORG rules-light engine, ensuring that mechanical complexity never stifles the atmospheric dread. While the system remains lethal, this iteration introduces a greater emphasis on character development and community ties. Players can choose from eight distinct Folk races and six Traditions, which serve as optional classes to ground characters within the subterranean society.
The core rulebook is designed as an art-heavy, mood-driven volume. It includes a comprehensive bestiary featuring the “Darkness’ Hollowed” and the “Wretched,” alongside specialised rules for interacting with eldritch gods. High-level play even suggests the possibility of eating the hearts of these deities to gain power, a mechanic that aligns perfectly with the grim, transgressive tone established by Nohr’s previous work.
Fomoria stretches endlessly, a labyrinth of shifting tunnels and yawning caverns. Maps are lies, memories betray. Familiar paths twist. The promise of discovery leads to wonders and doom.

Collaborative Horror
This project marks a significant expansion of the MÖRK BORG ecosystem, following the success of titles like CY_BORG and Crown of Salt. By partnering with Free League Publishing for fulfilment, the creators have secured global reach, including local shipping hubs in the UK, US, and EU, mitigating the logistical hurdles often encountered in independent roleplaying game launches.
Beyond the core rules, the campaign introduces Wyrd and Ruin, an A5 zine featuring contributions from industry veterans, including Exeunt Press and Christian Eichhorn. This collaborative approach ensures that the “living subterranean world” is populated with diverse, terrifying perspectives right from the start.
