Wizards of the Coast has officially confirmed it is ending development on Sigil, its ambitious and troubled 3D virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons.
In a new “Sigil Sunset FAQ” posted on the D&D Beyond support site, the company announced that the VTT’s servers will be permanently shut down on October 31, 2026. Until that date, users can continue to access their campaigns and all existing features.

The company provided a direct explanation for sunsetting the project, which had been built using Unreal Engine 5.
At Wizards of the Coast, our goal has always been to create experiences that help you tell incredible stories together… While Sigil inspired thousands of players and creators, we realized we couldn’t sustain the level of ongoing support or the quality standard you deserve.
The statement continued, “Ending development allows us to focus our energy on building the best future digital D&D experiences possible, informed by everything we learned from Sigil and your feedback.”
This official cancellation codifies what many in the roleplaying community have suspected for over a year. Sigil‘s journey has been fraught with difficulties since its quiet beta launch in early 2025.
As Geek Native reported in March 2025, Wizards of the Coast laid off approximately 90% of the Sigil development team just three weeks after the beta went live. That launch was met with a lukewarm community response, with widespread criticism of technical issues, limited features, and extremely high-performance demands that required high-end gaming PCs to run.
Following those significant layoffs, the project was left with a skeleton crew, and its eventual closure was seen by many as an inevitability.
For users affected by the shutdown, Wizards of the Coast has outlined several compensation measures:
- D&D Beyond Subscribers: Anyone with a paid or trial Master Tier subscription who accessed Sigil at least once between March 1, 2025, and October 23, 2025, will receive six months of complimentary Master Tier access. This will be automatically applied to accounts on November 7, 2025.
- Core Rulebook Pre-orders: Customers who pre-ordered the 2024 Digital and Physical Core Rulebook Bundle and received the Sigil-exclusive Gold Dragon Digital Miniature will get a new digital dice set on D&D Beyond as a replacement.
- All Users: As a general thank-you, all registered D&D Beyond users will receive a new D&D Beyond character sheet backdrop later this year.
Wizards of the Coast was careful to note that this decision does not impact its other VTT project, the 2D-based Maps VTT, which remains in development.
After October 31, 2026, all content created within Sigil, including campaigns and notes, will be permanently deleted. The company advises users to take screenshots and manually copy any important journal entries they wish to save before that date.
