Latin names for fantasy fears
The approach of October always makes me think of Halloween. It’s a big holiday here in Scotland. I’ve been doing some Googling, and here’s a list of more quirky fears – in Latin!
- Alektorophobia – The fear of chickens.
- Koumpounophobia – The fear of buttons.
- Pogonophobia – The fear of beards.
- Gephyrophobia – The fear of bridges.
- Taphophobia – The fear of being buried alive.
- Omphalophobia – The fear of belly buttons.
- Globophobia – The fear of balloons.
- Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia – The fear of long words.
- Anatidaephobia – A fictional fear that a duck is watching you.
- Aphenphosmphobia – The fear of intimacy or being touched.
I’m no Latin expert (flashback to when GameWyrd/Geek Native tried to translate D&D 3e spell names to Latin) but let me suggest some fantasy Latin fears.
- Dracophobia – The fear of dragons – Draco is the Latin word for ‘dragon’ or ‘great serpent’. If I get any right, it’ll be this one.
- Orcophobia – The fear of orcs – Here, Orcus is a Roman god of the underworld and probably where Tolkien also got ‘orc’ from.
- Magiphobia – The fear of magic – Again, I feel I’m on safe ground here, Magia is Latin for magic.
- Aresurrectiophobia – The fear of not being resurrected – A bold one to finish. “A-” is the Latin prefix for not/without, and then we’re onto ‘resurrectio’ from resurgere.
