As the pitch video says, it was only a matter of time before Green Ronin and Valiant teamed up to do a version of the Valiant Universe as an RPG powered by Mutants and Masterminds. As it happens, it’s an especially tailored version of the popular superhero system accompanying the new game.
For fans quick enough to move in the 72-hour early bird window, there’s a free PDF copy of the comic book Unity, Vol 1: To Kill a King as an introduction to the setting. For those who want to see the TTRPG move in on the $30,000 funding goal, there’s the pitch page to watch.
Alternatively, for potential backers who know the setting but are curious about the RPG elements, then there’s the free to download RPG quickstart to check out as well.
A year or so ago, I would have said Bloodshot might have been Valiant’s number-one hero; there was even a movie. I can’t say the movie was a success, and now Bloodshot is dropped to the support benches with heroes like X-O Manowar, Faith and Dr. Mirage leading the charge.
Two books are attached to this Kickstarter: the Hero’s Handbook for the Rules and Introduction to the World. Then there’s the World of Valiant sourcebook that gets deeper into the setting and writes up more than 80 of the Valiant characters.
Green Ronin also plans accessories such as the Valiant Adventures Gamemaster’s Kit, Condition Cards, Hero Point Tokens and Character Record Folios.
There’s a print edition, a PDF and a Roll20 edition of the Hero’s Handbook in the works.
For Mutants & Mastermind fans, there are new rules for Bonus and Penalty Dice, skill refinements, Advantages, gritty damage and recovery rules to suit the Valiant universe, plus Challenge Points for GMs.
Valiant Adventures was designed by Steve Kenson, based on years of development of the Mutants & Masterminds game system and decades of experience in the RPG design field. It was developed by Alex Thomas, star online Gamemaster and host of The Joy of Gamemastering stream, and it comes from Green Ronin Publishing, a company with more than two decades of excellence in game publishing. Alex and Steve co-host our weekly streaming show Mutants & Masterminds Monday.
The first reward tier is for the Hero’s Handbook in PDF, which unlocks for backers at $20. Then, the World of Valiant in PDF, for backers at $30, but not both.
$40 gets backers both the print and PDF editions of the Hero’s Handbook, or it unlocks the PDF and Roll20 editions. At $55, backers get both the PDF and print versions of World of Valiant, and there’s no Roll20 option there.
If you want a PDF of both books, then it’s the $50 tier you’ll have to jump to, while the $85 mark gets PDFs and prints of the two.
There are add-ons that unlock as the tiers level up, and there are some final $100 and above tiers that offer the GM Kit with book combos.
Green Ronin is running the Kickstarter until February 22nd; the PDFs are due on October 2024 and print for the start of 2025.
