Crunchyroll will get cheaper for many people, not more expensive; it has been announced today.
The membership cost at the Mega Fan level in the UK will drop from £7.99 to £5.99. The service will get cheaper in India, Brazil and United Arab Emirates. Crunchyroll has shared the complete list of nearly 100 countries and territories.
This is welcome and unexpected news. Earlier this year, Crunchyroll and Funimation merged, leading some anime fans to speculate that with less competition, Crunchyroll could charge more. Netflix has been ramping prices and fighting for market share in some countries.
Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, said;
Earlier this year, we promised anime fans that we would provide more value in one subscription experience. Since then, our team has expanded our catalogue with more subtitled and dubbed anime in more languages than ever before. Today, we’re excited to offer Crunchyroll Premium memberships for select regions at a new, lower price for both existing subscribers and new fans alike, as we continue to add more content to the service.”
Crunchyroll offers two paid-for membership tiers, both ad-free, setting them apart from the free tier. Fan and Mega Fan give access to an extensive library and simulcasts, allowing fans to watch shows simultaneously as Japan premieres.
Some significant locations are not mentioned as getting a discount; USA or Canada, for example, Australia or New Zealand, nor are France and Germany on the list.
