Rightly so, the headlines are full of Wizards of the Coast buying D&D Beyond from Fandom. There’s a second D&D acquisition that’s happened today, though.
The Asmodee sibling, Aspyr Media, has agreed to buy Beamdog. Aspyr is part of Saber Interactive, and Saber Interactive is part of Embracer. Embracer owns Dark Horse and Asmodee, who owns Fantasy Flight and Edge Studio. Family trees, huh?
Beamdog is probably best known for its D&D computer RPGs and certainly for RPGs. Beamdog is the company behind titles like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Planescape: Torment.
Beamdog is based in Canada and was founded by BioWare co-founder Trent Oster and programmer Cameron Tofer. It’ll retain its independence.
What’s Beamdog working on right now? A new RPG called MythForce will enter early access later this month. Aspyr will be publishing it, and it looks like they think it will be a winner.
Beamdog CEO Trent Oster told the press;
This acquisition will open up a ton of exciting opportunities for us. Beamdog can now focus our talent, efforts, and imagination on building the great games we want to play while properly looking after established fan-favorite RPGs. Beamdog’s first original IP is a fun-filled start to our studio’s next chapter.”
Aspyr is busy remaking the classic computer RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Republic. Edge has the tabletop RPG license for Star Wars and is another sibling of publishers in the Embracer family.
