Glasgow-based Anna Blackwell is back on Kickstarter with another success, building on hits like Apothecaria and DELVE.
In “For Small Creatures Such As We”, an RPG that can be played alone or cooperatively, you travel the galaxy and create and connect with aliens. It’s inspired by Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers series.
Like Apothecaria, “For Small Creatures Such As We” is a journalling game, and you can back it on Kickstarter.
In the game, you’re a captain of a small spacecraft with an alien crew, and it’s this crew you’ll create and learn about as the game progresses. That means their biology, beliefs, cultures.
You’ll encounter more aliens, opening up the chance to learn even more. The game’s goal is to explore and connect; Blackwell wanted a system that created characters as richly realised as great TV shows or books.
This 60 page zine contains a quickstart with pre-generated crew members but also contains detailed information on how to think about and create your own unique species that feel believable by drawing information from various scientific fields such as zoology, astrobiology, and even botany and mycology. Though always with a touch of pseudoscience to let things flow free and fun of course.
If you just want this game and just want digital, then it’s offered up as a reward for supporters who contribute £6 or more.
A print copy, with shipping to be calculated later, is added to the rewards for backers at £15. That’s less than it’ll cost to buy the game.
If you want to catch up on Anna Blackwell’s designs, PDFs of “For Small Creatures Such As We”, Apothecaria, Delve, Rise, and the Umbra PDFs are rewarded at £20.
There are higher tiers until the £40 mark, which caps the campaign and includes PDFs and prints of all the games.
