Redditor /u/CrazyFuton has impressed the community with their 20-page new D&D class: The Trainer.
It’s a class that emphasises a strong bond between the character and their animal companion. As you might expect, the inspiration for the class comes from the Beast Master subclass. The difference is the animal companion has a more significant role in shaping the character so that different companion traits unlock depending on the companion the player wants.
The homebrew class isn’t for sale at the DMs Guild, Crazyfuton has made it available for free via GM Binder where you can browse it like a webpage, or download a PDF, and via Google Drive. It’s the live Google version of The Trainer you can find embedded below.
As you create your trainer character, consider the nature that gave you your particular abilities. Do you have innate animal empathy? Did you train with a single mentor? What are your past allegiances? Most importantly, how did you meet and bond with your animal companion? Did they choose you or did you choose them?
There are different types of animal companions but rather than pick species, a list which would be either endless or unsatisfying, the Trainer classes presents categories.
- There are;
- Bruiser companions
- Pack companions
- Fowl companions
- Prower companions
- Drake companions
- Swarm companions
