Limitless Adventures are good people. We once featured them on Geek Native after they offered to give away their games for free rather than have people become pirates.
Today, they launched a Kickstarter called Journey to Beryl’s Reach that uses 5e but doesn’t need a DM. There’s still 24 days on the clock but already nearly $8,500 of the $20,000 funding goal has been gathered. You can check out the progress here.
A pledge of $20 will get you the print and play PDF version of the game, and $35 will get you the physical copy. Limitless Adventures have divided their tiers into waves so if you back early, you get your game sooner than the Johnny-come-lately backers.
So, how does a DM-less 5e adventure even work? Rather than only having a book to pre-read carefully, there are cards divided into five categories. Players take turn flipping cards and steering the scene, consulting a book then-and-there to see what’s happening. Those categories are Combat, Puzzle, Roleplay, Skill Challenge, and Wildcard.
Not sure how that will work you can check a demo of Limitless Adventures’ first DM-less adventure Blood Queen’s Defiance on Twitch care of Dragons and Things.
There’s also this official explainer of the first adventure.
Andrew Hand, co-founder of Limitless Adventures, told press;
This DM-less adventure is meant to reduce dungeon master burnout, as well as provide those groups that don’t have a dungeon master a way to still get together and roll dice with their friends. We’re not looking to put DMs out of work, but rather give them a chance to play a character for once.”
