I still remember [redacted]’s death in Final Fantasy VII. It was very much the inevitable demise of a (possible) love interest to portray the villain as genuinely evil. Sure, yes, I knew I was artfully emotionally manipulated, but it worked on younger me. I suspect the death scene wouldn’t work so well on me this time. Audiences are a little more cliche-aware these days.
