Games Workshop have teamed up with mobile development studios Rodeo Games to make an iOS (iPhone, iPad) mobile Warhammer game.
In Warhammer Quest you control a party of four adventurers. So this isn’t a Warhammer Fantasy Battle style game nor is it an attempt to transport the traditional tabletop version of Warhammer to the iPad. Instead, Warhammer Quest is somewhere in between as the player controls a group of dungeon crawlers, battling their collective way to riches.
Games Workshop are famous for being super protective of their products. In a press statement, Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at the company, said;
“The guys at Rodeo are not only extremely talented developers with a great track record of successful iOS games in their Hunters franchise, but are also huge Warhammer fans,’
‘This powerful combination is creating a fantastic translation of this beloved game, as well as making it thoroughly enjoyable working with them.’
It is understood Warhammer Quest will use the same Taurus engine that was used in Rodeo’s recent Hunters 2 release. The Hunters series is held in high esteem by many.
The game is due out in the third quarter of 2012 but an early version will be demo’d during the Games Workshop UK Games Day in the Birmingham NEC in September.
I know I’m not going to be the only one thinking this, but I really hope they don’t keep it Apple only for too long. Us Android users like playing games too…
I wonder whether it’s because Rodeo’s engine is also iOS only. I don’t think this works as a marketing tactic any more.
I’d be interested in the numbers that FFG got for their stuff. I picked up Elder Sign my Android and love it, but it was a good few weeks wait after the apple peeps got their hands on it.
The name Warhammer Worst is taken from GW’s first foray into board games after the success of MB’s Hero Quest and Space Crusade games which used GW licenses.
I’m expecting a recreation of that game from a player POV.
Seems like a sensible expectation. Although I hope they go for a far more dark and gritty experience than a board game could offer.
*worst = quest. DYAC!
