The Royal Mint launched two official Star Trek 50p coins on 3 September 2026 to commemorate the sci-fi franchise’s 60th anniversary. The release marks the first time the long-running franchise has featured on British currency. Produced in collaboration with licensor Paramount, the collection opens with a reverse design showing the Vulcan salute, with a second coin featuring four franchise spacecraft, following in November.

While struck with the legal tender mark of a 50p coin, neither design will enter everyday till circulation. Prices start at £19.95 for a standard brilliant uncirculated copper-nickel edition, rising to £2,495.00 for limited-issue proof gold. The staggered rollout covers two individual designs alongside two-coin collector sets.
The opening coin pairs the traditional phrase “Live Long & Prosper” with the Vulcan hand greeting. The second November design features a composite profile of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, Enterprise NCC-1701-D, U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656, and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Selected issues incorporate colour printing designed to mimic the vivid hues of the 1966 television series. The obverse across all coins bears the official coinage portrait of King Charles III, sculpted by British artist Martin Jennings.
The Royal Mint has not named the individual sculptors or die engravers responsible for adapting the reverse sci-fi designs, opting instead to credit the artwork to brand licensor Paramount. The commercial rollout follows a succession of pop-culture runs by the Mint, which has previously issued commemoratives for Doctor Who, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings.
Tim Mulhall, Head of Fandom at The Royal Mint, said in a statement:
It’s a privilege for The Royal Mint to boldly go, celebrating 60 years of Star Trek with a keepsake that’s out of this world. Both collectable 50p coins are designed for fans who’ve grown up with the franchise and want a piece of that history to treasure. It’s a collectable built to live long and prosper in any collection and is a fitting way to mark six decades of a franchise that continues to inspire fans across the Galaxy.
Ruth Henriquez, Vice President of Products & Experiences at Paramount EMEA, said in a statement:
Star Trek has one of the most dedicated collector communities in the world, and these coins are a tribute to 60 years of the franchise. The Royal Mint carefully selects the brands it works with, and the affection generations of British fans have for Star Trek makes it a natural fit for this collaboration. Our partnership with The Royal Mint brings some of Star Trek’s most iconic symbols and spacecraft to fans through a unique collection created exclusively to mark this milestone anniversary, giving collectors a lasting keepsake to treasure for years to come.
The Mint operates from Llantrisant, located 12 miles northwest of Cardiff. The Welsh capital has served as the operational heart of British television sci-fi for decades, hosting major studio pipelines and gatherings such as Comic Con Wales. While the Llantrisant pressings target global sci-fi enthusiasts, the pricing scheme underlines the Mint’s commercial evolution from a state utility into a licensed giftware business.
The collection is currently available to order directly from the manufacturer.
