Irish publisher Cubicle 7 has officially announced Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition, with the core rulebook launching in PDF and opening for physical hardback pre-orders later this summer. The Balbriggan-based studio revealed the update ahead of the tabletop roleplaying game’s upcoming 40th anniversary, positioning the release as an engine refinement rather than a total system reset.

The new edition builds directly upon the foundation established by Fourth Edition in 2018. The design team aims to address long-standing community feedback regarding rules complexity, bookkeeping bloat, and combat drag while maintaining backwards-compatibility with existing 4e adventures and sourcebooks.
In an in-house interview published on the Cubicle 7 website, CEO Dominic McDowall explained the timing of the project:
The 40th Anniversary of WFRP is a fantastic time to celebrate the incredible journey and impact of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. We’ve got lots of plans, starting with a new edition of the rules. I can’t quite believe it’s been over eight years since I sat down with a blank page in front of me and started designing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fourth Edition! Since the game’s release, we’ve produced dozens of sourcebooks, supplements and adventures, so we’ve been building up lots of ideas for the next iteration of the rules. We’re lucky to be part of the wonderful Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay community too – there’s so much passion for the game so we get to hear a lot of feedback from everyone else’s experiences.”
Trimming Edge Rules and Restoring Lethality
A central focus of Fifth Edition is cutting away situational rules exceptions that slowed down table play. Combat encounters have been reworked to run faster and carry sharper consequences, reducing the defensive cushions that allowed veteran characters to shrug off fatal wounds.
Discussing the mechanical changes in the developer interview, Dominic McDowall noted:
“It’s a development from Fourth Edition – we’ve aimed to keep the satisfying level of detail people love while refining the play experience and addressing areas that have caused problems. We’ve reduced ‘special case’ rules where the impact wasn’t worth the additional effort, reworked combat to flow better and be easier to keep track of, and made the game a little more deadly. There are fewer ways to deflect critical hits now, for example, so combat feels more dangerous.”
Streamlined Resources and Tighter Magic
Character management also receives a significant clean-up in the new core rules. The separate pools of Resilience and Resolve have been retired and merged directly into Fate and Fortune, cutting down the number of counters players need to manage during a session. Talents have been reworked to provide distinct, focused benefits rather than stacking overlapping bonuses. The magic system also incorporates the expanded rules originally introduced in the Winds of Magic supplement directly into the core book.
Addressing the system tweaks and compatibility in the interview, Line Developer Dave Allen highlighted:
We’ve done a lot of work in the details of the system. Talents now apply to specific areas and do that one thing well, avoiding the problem of overlapping bonuses. We’ve merged Resilience and Resolve into Fate and Fortune to reduce tracking those resources. The magic system takes cues from Winds of Magic and integrates that material more tightly into the core rules.”
Dave Allen also reassured players about using their existing collections:
Ensuring backwards-compatibility has been a very important part of the design process for us. We’re gamers ourselves, so we want everyone to be able to keep using their books. Apart from that, we’re too excited for everything we have planned for the coming years – we don’t want to delay anything revisiting areas we’ve already covered!”
Product Range and Upcoming Roadmap
The launch of the Fifth Edition core rulebook will be supported by a range of card decks, custom dice, and maps. Cubicle 7 confirmed that upcoming setting releases and adventure modules will explore Wrecker’s Point, Marienburg, a Dark Elf Black Ark, and a brand-new full-length campaign.
