Official channels for the ElfQuest franchise have announced that the ElfQuest Classic Deluxe Boxed Set, a fully remastered 40th-anniversary restoration of the vintage tabletop game, will officially launch to the public in retail stores this July.

The disclosure marks a major milestone for fans of the iconic fantasy property, confirming that the project will transition from a highly successful crowdfunding model directly to shelves at local gaming stores worldwide.
The upcoming reissue is a definitive historical compilation of the classic fantasy title, which debuted in 1984. Pioneered by Chaosium president Rick Meints, the project brings the classic Basic Roleplaying system adaptation of the World of Two Moons back into print. The product combines the core rules with a vast library of classic supplements into a single expanded physical package.
The ElfQuest roleplaying game expands on the innovative graphic novels and adventures created by Wendy Pini and Richard Pini starting in 1978. Renowned for depicting elves and magical beings with genuine emotional weight and sophisticated motivations, the original game allowed players to step into the boots of wolfriders, stalk primaeval forests, and navigate a dangerous world.
Two years ago, during the initial announcement of the restoration project, Richard Pini, co-creator of ElfQuest, said in a statement:
ElfQuest has from its inception been about the value and strength of family and tribe. We can’t think of a better way to encourage community than through people coming together to enjoy the world-building challenges that role-playing offers.”
The upcoming retail edition features an expanded 2-inch deep box to accommodate a dramatic influx of material that was absent or separated in previous printings. Inside, buyers will find the 80-page Elfbook, the 40-page Worldbook containing three full scenarios, the ElfQuest Companion, The Sea Elves supplement, and the Elf War booklet.
Unlike the problematic 1989 second edition, which simply bound the uncorrected original layout and loose errata into a single perfect-bound volume, this deluxe edition features a completely restored layout with all historical errata fully incorporated into the text for the first time.
The restoration process highlighted the unique preservation challenges of 1980s tabletop design. Because original layout work from that era was executed physically via cardstock storyboards using literal cut-and-paste columns, text blocks, and art pieces, the physical source files were lost over time. Chaosium had to reconstruct the multi-book architecture digitally, ensuring that the softcover booklets lay flat on the gaming table.
The physical footprint of the retail box has grown considerably to incorporate extra components originally unlocked during the Kickstarter campaign. These additions include a brand-new, three-panel Gamemaster screen featuring classic colour comic art on the player-facing side and reference tables on the reverse, a previously unpublished world map, full-colour cardboard standees with plastic bases, and a comprehensive 10-piece deluxe dice set that introduces D4, D8, D12, and percentile D10s to the box.
Operating out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Chaosium is leaning heavily on its established global distribution network to ensure a smooth retail rollout. The massive 3-kilogram weight of the full package presents a unique logistical challenge for a classic boxed-set reissue.
