As thousands of roleplaying games enthusiasts prepare to descend on Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) for the UK Games Expo this weekend (29 to 31 May 2026), organisers have leveraged social media to highlight the event’s inclusive infrastructure. While the floor plans establishing gender-neutral facilities in Hall 5 were mapped out months ago, the timing of the expo’s public reminder serves as a strategic reassurance following recent national policy shifts regarding single-sex spaces.

Just three days prior to the expo’s announcement, Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson laid new Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance before Parliament. The updated code clarifies that transgender individuals can be legally excluded from single-sex spaces, such as hospital wards and public toilets, if deemed a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim like privacy or safety.
At a time when regulatory bodies are tightening their grip, the UK Games Expo’s public communication highlights a notable gap between what the government is pushing for and the actual experiences at major tabletop conventions. Organising large events at venues like the NEC requires careful planning well in advance. It’s clear that these facilities weren’t just thrown together quickly; the decision to highlight them now reflects the struggles the community faces with ongoing regulatory issues.
Hall 5 has gender-neutral toilets, which are part of the NEC’s plan to make the event more accessible. For extra help, you’ll find Help Desks with friendly staff in Halls 2, 3A, and 4. The NEC also has wheelchair-accessible lifts, automatic doors at the Piazza and Atrium, disabled parking for Blue Badge holders, and a fast-track queue for guests, press, and anyone needing accessible entry.
The UK Games Expo organising team, speaking via an official social media update, said in a statement,
At UK Games Expo 2026 we are committed to creating a welcoming, accessible and inclusive experience for all attendees.
This year we are introducing gender neutral toilets in Hall 5 alongside the existing facilities across the venue.
If you need support during the show, Help Desks will be available in Halls 2, 3A and 4, staffed by our UKGE Ambassadors who are there to assist visitors throughout the weekend.
The NEC also provides a range of accessible facilities including accessible toilets, lifts, wheelchair accessible halls, disabled parking and mobility scooter or wheelchair hire.
We want everyone to feel comfortable, supported and able to enjoy everything UKGE has to offer.
