Stockholm-based tabletop powerhouse Free League Publishing has announced a 10th-anniversary Kickstarter for its acclaimed dark fantasy roleplaying game, Symbaroum. Slated to launch in late May 2026, the crowdfunding campaign will introduce a restructured set of core rules designed to lower the barrier to entry, alongside a brand-new hardcover campaign setting titled City States of Vendilyn – A Ravaged Realm.

The anniversary project sees the original four core books condensed into three revised volumes: a standalone Core Rulebook, a comprehensive Gamemaster’s Guide, and the Davokar Creature Codex. Free League aims to provide a smoother onboarding experience for newcomers while offering veterans new lore and mechanics to explore in the devastated lands of Vendilyn.
The timing of this launch is particularly notable for British tabletop enthusiasts. With the Kickstarter dropping in late May 2026, the campaign perfectly aligns with the UK Games Expo, which runs from May 29th to 31st at the NEC in Birmingham. Free League has historically dominated the trade halls at UKGE, and it stands to reason that the publisher will use the UK’s largest hobby convention, expected to draw upwards of 70,000 attendees, as a major promotional engine or even a live physical launchpad for the Symbaroum anniversary edition.
However, the initial announcement leaves a few critical questions unanswered for the modern gamer. While the press release heavily emphasises the premium hardcover format and brand-new character artwork from definitively dark lead artists Martin Grip and Gustaf Ekelund, there is a glaring silence regarding Virtual Tabletop support. Free League has cultivated strong partnerships with platforms like Foundry VTT and Alchemy RPG, making the omission of digital integrations from the 10th-anniversary pitch a notable mystery. Or perhaps it’s just a foregone conclusion these days?

Furthermore, the restructuring of the core rules presents a potential pain point for existing fans. While the Davokar Creature Codex promises updated practical stat blocks building on the legacy of the original Monster Codex, it remains to be seen if Free League will offer a digital upgrade path for players who already own the 2016 English editions, or if long-time fans will be expected to repurchase the entire core suite to stay current. Shipping logistics for heavy hardcovers into the UK also remain a perennial hurdle that backers will undoubtedly be monitoring closely.
Speaking on the intent behind the new editions, the press release notes:
As part of the anniversary project, the content of the original four core books has been reorganized into three revised hardcover volumes while preserving a standalone, all-in-one Core Rulebook… designed to welcome first-time players while offering longtime fans more to explore.
For now, fans of lead designer Mattias Johnsson Haake’s brutal and beautifully muddy world can prepare to venture back into Davokar, or at least onto the crowded floor of the Birmingham NEC to see what Free League has planned.
