The landscape of Middle-earth tabletop gaming has officially entered its “Asmodee era.” Today, Brooklyn-based Sirius Dice announced a major partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises and Asmodee to produce a new line of officially licensed The Lord of the Rings tabletop accessories. The deal marks one of the first significant external licences granted since Asmodee was appointed the exclusive “category manager” for Embracer Group’s Tolkien properties late last year.

The rollout begins this September with Adventure Dice, a series of sets themed around specific character classes and iconic imagery. This will be followed in January 2027 by Treasure Packs—blind-box assortments featuring randomised dice and collectable items—and oversized 55mm d20s. While the announcement promises “premium design,” the move toward a randomised “blind-pack” model for dice suggests a strategic shift in how Tolkien’s world is being monetised for the tabletop.
The Asmodee Gatekeeper
This partnership is more than a simple licensing deal; it is the first fruit of a new gatekeeping regime. In late 2025, Asmodee was handed the keys to the kingdom, becoming the sole authority responsible for managing the tabletop category for Middle-earth Enterprises. As previously reported by Geek Native, this move raised questions about the future of existing licences, such as Free League’s The One Ring roleplaying games.
By selecting Sirius Dice – a company that has rapidly secured high-profile deals for Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur’s Gate 3 – Asmodee is signalling a preference for partners capable of mass-market retail scale. Luke Peterschmidt, Head of Category Management at Asmodee, now sits as the arbiter of which creators are allowed to touch the Professor’s legendarium.
Luke Peterschmidt, Head of Category Management at Asmodee, said in a statement,
Partnering with Sirius allows us to bring The Lord of the Rings to tabletop fans in new ways. Their attention to craftsmanship, passion for storytelling, and respect for the world of Middle-earth makes them a natural fit for this collaboration.”
The Ziran Influence
The inclusion of “Treasure Packs” in the lineup reflects the recent leadership change at Sirius Dice. In early 2025, the company appointed Justin Ziran as Partner and Co-President. Ziran, the former President of WizKids, is a veteran of the “collectable” business model, having overseen the success of HeroClix and randomised miniature lines for decades.
His influence appears to be driving Sirius toward a high-volume, collectable-tier strategy. While this ensures a constant presence in Friendly Local Game Stores, it also introduces “loot box” mechanics to the dice hobby—a point of occasional friction among fans who prefer to know exactly which “precious” they are buying.
Lax Chandra, Co-Founder and President of Sirius, said in a statement,
We’re thrilled to partner with asmodee and Middle-earth Enterprises to bring the world of The Lord of the Rings to life through beautifully crafted dice-based products. This agreement allows us to combine premium design with beloved storytelling, giving fans new ways to experience Middle-earth at the gaming table.”
Release Timeline
Fans can expect the first wave of The Lord of the Rings Adventure Dice to hit retail shelves in September 2026. These sets are expected to focus on thematic representations of the Fellowship and key antagonists. The more controversial Treasure Packs, which lean into the “blind unboxing” appeal that Ziran championed at WizKids, are slated for January 2027.
