Roll20 has announced a significant expansion of its digital Dungeons & Dragons offering, rebranding the former 5e NEXUS into the new D&D NEXUS. The platform is a digital reader and compendium built to enhance the Dungeons & Dragons experience across the Roll20 virtual tabletop.

This strategic move comes just weeks after Wizards of the Coast officially confirmed it was shutting down its own ambitious Sigil VTT.
The core proposition for players is the “Two Experiences, One Library” system. Users who own Dungeons & Dragons content on Roll20 will automatically have that content accessible on D&D NEXUS at no extra cost once they link their accounts. This allows a Game Master to plan a session using the D&D NEXUS reader on a phone or tablet, then switch to the Roll20 VTT to run the game without repurchasing any books.
D&D NEXUS launches with four Dungeons & Dragons titles:
- D&D 2024 Player’s Handbook
- D&D 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide
- D&D Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn
- Adventures in Faerûn
The platform also includes the free Basic Rules for both the 2024 and 2014 editions of D&D, providing a free entry point for new players.
Roll20 has confirmed that more official Dungeons & Dragons titles, as well as third-party content, will be added to D&D NEXUS in the coming weeks. All existing 5e NEXUS content has already been migrated to the new shared library.
To guide the platform’s development, the company is actively seeking user feedback through a D&D NEXUS Launch Survey.
This announcement solidifies Roll20’s position as a strategic digital partner for Dungeons & Dragons. The new D&D NEXUS appears positioned as a direct competitor to Wizards of the Coast’s own D&D Beyond, offering an alternative connected ecosystem for digital reading and virtual tabletop play.
