Dan Da Dan kicks off when two school rivals bet each other to find out whether either ghosts or aliens are real – and then all hell breaks loose.
The show has been a smash hit, and Netflix has season 2.
I watched the season 1 movie, a merger of the first few episodes, on the big screen and did not get around to writing it up. Why not? I couldn’t see the madcap hijinks and dodgy schoolgirl treatment going quite as mainstream as it did!
So, why did I get it wrong? As this trailer makes clear, there’s stunning and fluid animation by Science SARU. What I call “madcap hijinks” others call breakneck pacing and an ability to seamlessly juggle disparate tones while developing endearing characters.
Its widespread availability on major streaming platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll ensured easy access.

Dan Da Dan became Netflix’s most-watched anime globally in the latter half of 2024. Beyond viewership, Dan Da Dan has also made a cultural impact, with its infectious opening theme song by Creepy Nuts becoming a viral sensation on social media.
I think it was that bloomin’ song!
