Towel Day is an annual celebration observed on May 25th by fans of the author Douglas Adams and his iconic science fiction series, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The day pays tribute to Adams, who sadly passed away in 2001, and his famously practical advice for interstellar hitchhikers. On Towel Day, fans worldwide proudly carry a towel, an item Adams described in his series as “about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.”
The oldest Towel Day content I can find on Geek Native dates back to 2011, but, sadly, that’s being retired today as it used Adobe Flash, which is dead technology, from Flickr to make an animated gallery of the pictures geeks had uploaded to the site to celebrate the day. Innocent times, huh?
As a result, I think the new record goes to “I find your lack of towel disturbing” from 2013.
Towel Day towels
I’ve gone looking for geeky towels to celebrate.

I’ve gone looking for geeky towels to celebrate.
Zatu normally concentrates on selling board games, minis and card games, but I’m not surprised to see this Masters of the Universe towel in their shop.
Who wants to dry with Skeletor, tho? Okay, maybe don’t answer that!

These Mario-inspired and embroidered towels are excellent. The catch is that this Etsy boutique, KatashasEmbroidery can’t do all the colours all of the time because they are reliant on getting towels in to embroider in the first place.
Nicely, you can message Katasha with your requests. I’m confident that Nintendo-embroidered towels will last longer than any printing.

Kiki’s Delivery Service feels appropriately wholesome to me and therefore a good choice for a towel.
Merchoid are taking pre-orders for this shelf towel, which is 34x80cm. I like the length, I know I can fold this over the shelf and see a lot of the design.

I haven’t shopped at Vicious Malicious before but I like the name and the site passes the FakeSpot test.
However, the zombie hand design (a hand towel!) sells me on this. There’s something delicious in the juxtaposition of zombie rot and towel cleanliness that appeals to me.

Researching this blog post tribute to Towel Day has led me to discover MadAboutHorror.co.uk. Oddly, the site seems to have a few towel options! I’m not complaining.
That said, my favourite towel, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, does seem to keep selling out. Perhaps horror fans have a similar sense of humour.

An anime-style towel but not overly so… it’s actually the colour contrast that speaks to me. I can see this towel working in the bathroom as well as a purple contrast to the sands of a beach.
It’s a bonus that the towel is a window. That you can put a towel down and transform any area into something that looks like a portal is wonderful.

Okay, my argument is that these dinosaur hooded towel ponchos should not be excluded from this post because we’ve not previously worried about type of towel. We’ve had shelf towel, bath towel and beach towel.
My reason for including the dinosaur poncho is that’s incredibly cute and I bet transforming your youngster into a roaring dinosaur is a great way to get them into an extra layer of clothing.
It’s just a shame there’s no adult version, to be honest.
If you miss the tradition of uploading geeky towel pictures then you can try the comments below or perhaps we can try and bring back #TowelDay on the 25th with the hashtag on social media.
