Geek Native has previously looked at Defy the Gods the messy and queer RPG so that you can take an extra look, and now Chris Sellers’ campaign is live on Kickstarter.
We’ve until May 29 to back the project, as nearly 400 people have already done.
Defy the Gods is a tabletop roleplaying game that immerses players in a world of thrilling adventure, fervent romance, and accursed abilities, all set within a fantastical ancient Mesopotamia. Drawing inspiration from iconic works such as “Conan,” “Clash of the Titans,” and “Princess Mononoke,” this game infuses sword and sorcery roleplaying with themes of queer love and rebellion.
In Defy the Gods, player characters confront envious deities and oppressive rulers bent on destruction. This game is where attraction is a universal and visceral force, allowing PCs to (maybe) win anyone’s interest. Characters can “spend” the hearts of others as a potent form of influence – to aid or thwart them, throw them off-balance, or tempt them to do their bidding. In Defy the Gods, love knows no rules, empowering players to spin a story of wild invention and heart-rending drama collectively.
Defy the Gods is a sword & sorcery story game about love and might. It’s equal parts romance and adventure, using a version of the Powered by the Apocalypse engine. The game’s opinionated mechanics point your story in exciting directions. Like Thirsty Sword Lesbians, you get to flirt with and tempt other characters. But you also get opportunities to seize power, which cuts against the romance.

Backers pledging $20 or more get the PDF and print-on-demand edition of the game. The POD code provides an at-cost copy of the game, which means shipping and printing are still to be added.
The standard Defy the Gods hardcover is added at $40, and shipping worldwide.
The special hardcover edition by Thalie Shelen with foil stamping is unlocked at $80. However, two-thirds of this tier have already sold.
There’s a “Daring Rogue” bundle at $90, which adds dice, postcards and a Defy the Gods pin.
There’s also a $140 tier with more goodies and a “big bundle of doom” at $250, which draws your character and backers a three-session game.
Chris estimates a September delivery for the PDF and November for the physical books.
