Something wildly different got our attention today, in the form of the trailer for Grand Theft Hamlet; a film entirely staged within the feral virtual world of Grand Theft Auto Online – and it’s really taking off, with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes!
This unexpected but actually quite genius-looking documentary is not only doing well among critics, it’s also managed to secure the Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.
Directed by Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls, Grand Theft Hamlet looks like a fun ride that I can already see becoming a cult favourite – and that’s based off the trailer alone (I haven’t even watched it yet).
The film documents “two out-of-work actors as they try to stage Hamlet entirely inside the chaotic world of Grand Theft Auto Online. Hailed as ‘‘the year’s funniest documentary’ by Time Out, this SXSW-winning documentary is chaotic, hilarious, and just a little bit insane.”

Grand Theft Hamlet will be released in US cinemas and also globally on streaming service MUBI on 17th January.
What do you think of the trailer for Grand Theft Hamlet – have you watched the film yet from its UK cinema release in December? Let me know in the comments.
