I felt called out by Anthony DeMinico’s Weeaboomer strapline. The RPG is pitched for anime fans with adult responsibilities and moderate joint pain.
I’m less sure about the opening line about how it is tough being an older anime fan. Yes, it was hard to get anime, and it was socially taboo, but let’s not gatekeep and enjoy the current boom. The campaign has a month to run and $15,000 to raise.
Weeaboomers’ particular flavour and style of anime from the 80s and 90s. That’s how we get to the portmanteau origin of the game’s name – Weeaboo (Japanese anime fan) and Boomer (truncation of Baby Boomer).
Weeaboomer uses its own 2d12 system, throwing some snark at 5e on the way to that decision.
Anthony has been on Kickstarter plenty of times before. Weeaboomer is the librarian’s third campaign, and he’s backed 5 others.
Players will build their middle-aged heroes by giving them powers befitting an anime character. Whether that’s awakening some sort of spiritual power, acknowledging a royal alien bloodline, chosen by a powerful magical relic, transforming into a magical being, or partnering with a giant robot, your previously mundane protagonist now has a new world of problems.
Backers can get the PDF copy of the tabletop as a thank-you for a $5 pledge.
At $20, backers also get the softcover edition as well as the PDF as a thank you. Then, at $30, the physical edition gets upgraded to hardback.
There’s the $45 tier for a softcover copy of Weeaboomers and every Pithy Production to date. There’s a $50 tier for a bonus bookmark and bag with the games and then $55 for the Weeaboomers hardback and softback Pithy books.
$500 is the top tier, with digital, hardcover, bookmarks and a full-page art dedication.
Pithy Productions, Anthony estimates an April 2024 delivery for the campaign.
