Shadow of Mogg is an RPG that explores post-Brexit London. It’s written by Panayiotis Lines as is the result of a successful 2020 Kickstarter.
In the post-apocalyptic London underground, characters hide from a disaster known only as “the event”. It must not be discussed.
Characters are ordinary folk, once a British public member, such as a candlestick maker, a baker or a nurse. They might also be someone stranger, such as a time traveller or the CEO of a bank.
The download, which is available on DriveThruRPG and Manic Productions, is a 90-page ruleset based on a simple d6 system.
The post-Brexit game has some themes, as you might expect, and explore the impact of mob rule on democracy, the fragility of hope and the banality of evil.
What sets Shadow of Mogg apart from many other tabletop RPGs is the systems group, resolution mechanics. The zine RPG uses a voting method that tests democracy to determine success.
Players have access to 37 character classes, a representative sample of modern British society, to pick from.
GMs have 36 random tunnel events and a procedure to run London Underground-based dungeon crawling. Tools help generate events, NPCs and locations. The rules also cover managing group resources and group anxiety.
The name of the RPG, Shadow of Mogg, may remind some readers of the Conservative MP and pro-Brexit pioneer Jacob Rees-Mogg. The millionaire opponent of same-sex marriage is the son of Lord William Rees-Mogg, co-author of Sovereign Individual, a book that predicted the rise of Bitcoin and how wealthy individuals could make money from the nationwide crisis, an approach which became known as ‘disaster capitalism.
