3 new pictures of Smaug – The Hobbit finally shows us dragon

December 2, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

We’ve been teased with bits of Smaug in various Hobbit trailers but now we get to see him. There’s a catch. He’s turned up in an unexpected place – New Zealand. In particular, in the skies of New Zealand painted onto the side of an Air New Zealand plane. The plane is 54 metres long […]

You’ll never guess where The Hobbit was filmed

November 22, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Did I say “You’ll never guess where The Hobbit was filmed”? – if that’s true the marketing agency for Air New Zealand is weeping. Last year we had Peter Jackson and the WETA Workshop crew give an unexpected briefing for for the airline. It’s a year later and we’ve got a sequel to the viral […]

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer

October 1, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This is The Desolation of Smaug trailer we’ve been expecting to air today. What we weren’t expecting was two and a half minutes that ooze Middle Earth and features certain elves. What do you think? Tempted? Re-energised for the trilogy?

A look inside The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey board game

June 28, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This July we’ll see a new The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey board game from Cryptozoic ship to hobby stores. In fact, this may be Amazon’s page for it. Designed by Reiner Knizia the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey game makes use of two boards, a handful of dice, 14 dwarf cards, 18 resource titles, 2 […]

New trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

June 11, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Due out at the end of the year, the second part of The Hobbit, is The Desolation of Smaug. This trailer shows us some more elf, orc, spider, Legolas and dragon action. Smaug doesn’t look like a “could be kind and wise” dragon. Not at all. This is the UK trailer.

Hobbit Hole cake

May 11, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

You would think it would be quite hard to bake a hole. However, Pink Cake Box have done that and gone one further. They’ve baked a Hobbit Hole and made a fantastic looking cake. Middle Earth baking is a thing. Have you seen this Smaug versus Bard cake already?

Wizards without Coats: One Ring

April 10, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

In this week’s Wizard without Coats encounter, we go to places that The Lord of the Rings never did.   < PreviousWizards without Coats Next >  Thats like, the first unwritten rule; no one wears the One Ring doing dishes… gah hobbits! The first rule of surviving the dangerous fantasy world – do not wear […]

The Hobbit: Richard Armitage talks about playing Thorin Oakenshield

April 6, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

I had no idea Richard Armitage was so tall. Sure, he seems like the tallest of the dwarves but at 6’2″ you can see why he doubted he would be cast. Looking forward to the Laketown scenes now. Not only do we have Stephen Fry to look forward too but we can try and spot […]

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug preview feature

April 1, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This isn’t a trailer as such but this feature with Peter Jackson does give as a peak into the second Hobbit film; The Desolation of Smaug. Released on April Fools’ Day it does have some joking with questions from special guest stars but is certainly worth a watch. I especially liked the Mirkwood art. Via […]

The Hobbit’s Bag End as a bonsai tree

March 5, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This bonsai is all types of impressive. It’s very clearly a micro version of Bag End, home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and based on Tolkien’s original words. “A large hill (The Hill) lay to the north, and under its southern slopes Bilbo’s father Bungo built the luxurious smial Bag End above the lane of […]
