Short film: Kin (GM Inspiration)

September 27, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This short film, one of the first Kin Fables, reminds me of the RPG Beyond the Supernatural. I’m not sure why. Sure; there are supernatural elements in it but surely the project could remind me equally of Kult or a Cthulhu game? This is a Five Knights Production, a film by Seb and Ben McKinnon […]

GM Inspiration: Aztec mummy

September 6, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Need to terrorise your players with an undead horror they’ll recognise … and yet have it be worryingly different? Geek Native does like to share RPG ideas so let me try and address the challenge. What about an Aztec mummy? Whether your game world has an Egypt or Mexico (style country) or not it may […]

GM Inspiration: Wooden whale monsters

June 28, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

These pictures from the artist David Kemp inspire all sorts of GM and world building thoughts in me. He found two derelict cove-boats and joined them together to create the “Wooden Whaler”. I can imagine barbarian hordes spilling out from between the teeth of fantasy sized alternatives. What do you think?

GM Inspiration: Those sneaky weredog-werewolves

April 17, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Quite some picture. I wonder if the owner knows that the friendly looking dog is actually either a werewolf or some sort of canine shadow demon? Perhaps the owner is actually a demonologist and the very woman responsible for summoning the creature. Via /r/pics.

GM Inspiration: Steampunk werelion gentlemen

April 14, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Here’s a picture that might inspire an encounter or two. If you’re running a steampunk came that features werelions or lion-men in suits then I think we’d all like to hear about it! Why not leave a teaser in the comments below. You might also check out some other RPG ideas. Via /r/pics.

Ammonite fossil skull

March 10, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This skull, some 9.6 inches long, is carved from an Ammonite fossil. In India the skulls are associated with the God Vishnu and are used in various ceremonies. The name Ammonite actually comes from teh Greek ram-horned God called Ammon. I think these skulls are wonderful inspiration for GMs. There are plenty of fantasty creatures […]

RPG Ideas… nearly impossible buildings

February 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

These photographs are the work of Jim Kazanjian. You can even buy limited edition prints of the clever work at 23 Sandy. He’s inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and its not hard to see the M.C. Escher influence either. I’m recommending these “nearly impossible” buildings as RPG ideas because it’ll unsettle players in lovely ways. Some […]

The Role-Playing Color Wheel

December 16, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This is a tool for Gamemasters. It lets GMs add incidental colour to descriptions of the gaming world. At the start of each session, rotate the rings randomly to create new slices so that when you need to reference some colour you can pick a slice and use it for inspiration. The colour wheel was […]
