Siberian spiked armour

October 9, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood 2 Comments

Calculate the AC on a spiky suit of armour. There’s a challenge. This vintage armour is a real thing, surfaced recently by Retronaut thanks to Malcolm Kick. This is Siberian bear-baiting, or perhaps bear hunting, armour. The former is more likely because running around in this leather suit would be awkward at most. The armour […]

Steampunk Predator helmet

October 8, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

You can wear this. This Predator helmet has been made from fiberglass and weighs less than 2kg. What gives it the metallatic look? Waxes, carefully airbrushed paint and metal rubs. Fancy it? You can buy the helemt from Skinkwork Props in the UK. A raw helemt costs £95 and a finished, painted, one is £165.

September 7, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

In a world were we can turn horses into dragons it is important that we can also armour our trusty hounds. Female armour in RPGs

July 22, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood 5 Comments

This comic strip from Dorkly tackles the thorny issue (or should that be thongy issue) of armour design for female characters in RPGs. They call it “Lady Armor” which isn’t a title I could quite… bare. The question is; do you think this comic strip also solves the contentious issue?

Shogun armour Boba Fett style

July 11, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Prop builder Allen Amis makes a living building custom sci-fi weapons and armour. He was inspired by Clinton Felker’s artwork, an unique blend of sci-fi with historic, that he created an actual suit of armour. The armour Amis has created is a fantastic hybrid of shogun with the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett. What do […]

The warrior woman photography of Andrey Yakovlev and Lili Aleeva

January 2, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The Russian pair have a fantastic eye for photographic fantasy. The Photodom site has some more examples of their work – be a little cautious as some of the shots are a little sexy in the name of art – and they’re also active on Behance.

Does your RPG suffer from female armour syndrome?

June 29, 2011 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

I nearly opened this blog post with “I wonder what the figures are…” that would have been a bad start. Let’s return to figure issues later. I wonder what the stats are; the percentage of male gamers who play female characters versus the percentage of female gamers who play male characters. Of the male gamers […]
