The new book, The Land of Seed and Blossom, includes an adventure, introduces new clans from the Land of Seed and Blossom and looks at the Blossom ninja’s uprising against the Izou Empire. It follows on from the clanbook Firebrands that put the spotlight on the clans like the Blazing Dancers and the Virtuous Body Gardeners.

It’s got to be the Tenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How can you go wrong with a ninja/superhero mashup concept.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I used to watch it every morning before school, but I’m talking the originals not the newer excuse of a series.
Revenge of the Ninja with Sho Kosugi. Basically all his movies. I was already doing Karate by the early ’80’s but he dramatically changed my perceptions of how a warrior could act. He could be cunning, evasive, quiet, and devious in addition to the other archtypical attributes. That lead me to research real-life ninja grandmaster An-shu Stephen K. Hayes. Although I went through many phases in martial arts training and role playing over the years I always loved shinobi lore. Ironically 7 months ago I got to interview An-shu Hayes for Taekwondo Times Magazine. It was around the same time… Read more »
I would have to say Basilisk. Two warring clans. Love denied and various martial arts techniques. Beautiful series. And cool how it was translated to a live-action movie called Shinobi: Heart Under Blade. It basically was Romeo and Juliet with super secret deadly martial arts techniques.
Ridley Scott’s “Alien” is one of the best, purest ninja movies around. Think about it, the killer wears all black, most of it’s face is obscured (i.e. no eyes or nose), the “Nostromo” in space is a small, isolated community with a specific cultural history much like Japan in its post-unification/early feudal stages, the beast is genetically engineered to be a perfect killing machine a la the inbreeding programs in Basilisk, and it’s seeking revenge on the crew for “killing its family” by leaving the eggs to starve in the alien derelict. Oh, there’s also an evil ninja (S.O. Ash)… Read more »
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the comic)
Though this old article in the Onion is great: http://www.theonion.com/articles/disgruntled-ninja-silently-kills-12-coworkers,1575/
I am going to cheat a little in that I can’t remember exact titles. I have always loved my Hong Kong Connection kung fu movies, and in those films they always portray ninjas as the best evil and supernatural assassins. For example in one film a ninja hid within the womb of a pregnant woman until he could burst forth to attack his target.
I remember when you told me about that. Now THAT is some messed up stuff right there. lol.
Yeah that example is disturbing, but it really drives home just how powerful they believed the Ninja to be in their art. It is often portrayed that the Ninja are just too much even for the main Hero to fight. In Wuxia films, the Ninja are often seen as next to demons.
Honestly I want to say my ninja Kina, but Ninja Bunny told me I can’t use her since she is not from an anime, game or movie :( I would then have to say that my favorite ninja of all time would probably be Sub Zero, I have played Sub Zero since Mortal Kombat came out int he arcade. Between his betrayal, and have a killer mortal enemy from an opposing clan, then dying and not really being dead…I just love his character!
Teenage mutant ninja turtles – still brilliant (or brilliantly crap) after all these years!
I’m a big fan of reallifecomics.com for all my Ninja needs. But wait, you say, that’s not a Ninja comic! Ah, but the protagonist (Greg Dean) is actually THE T-SHIRT NINJA! #trufax #thatsjustscience
Gotta love the web cartoon “Samurice”. That has got to be my favorite ‘ninja’ show (even though the ninja-rice failed to assassinate their target).
Personally, I have to go for a more recent movie – Ninja Assassin. The idea of the Ninja clan is going after one of it’s own for betraying the clan. Taking people out before they know what’s happening. Moving unseen. Abilities that border on the supernatural. Pure awesome!!! There’s a reason why one should fear Ninja’s – Ninja Assassin showed it.
A bit ‘live action Anime’ (actually based on a Manga comic). 10 trainees go in only 5 come out.:)
Sorry movies name is “Azumi”
Ninja Scroll still holds a special place in my heart for ninja’s and over the top action. But Samurai Champloo also hits that action goodness with it’s clever assassins and overt action.
Add in the Naruto series for just a different approach to the genre all together and mix it all together and that’s what I get from Wu Xing, and amazing looking game and from what I’ve read an amazing game system to run it in.
So one of my favorite is Enter the Ninja. It has the perfect 70’s style camp that comes out of Hollywood trying to copy the Hong Kong Genre that they don’t really understand. They hire Sho Kosugi as the bad Black Ninja and Frank Nero (Mr. All American) as the good White Ninja and then put them in a boxing ring to settle their Sensei Issues. Throw in a braless wearing brit and a New Jersey mafia guy and you got the perfect Ninja Drama.
Ninja Wars, beautiful movie. If you can find the dubbed version, the evil wizard has hilarious voice acting. Pretty crazy, ninjas have neat/weird powers.
Ninja Assassin with Rain. Bad ass disappearing ninjas. Showers of blood. A whole army unit taking on a ninja compound with heavy weapons. Nice!!!
I really like Eric Van Lustbader’s “White Ninja” , the third book in a 6 book cycle. The protagonist appears in several of his books. The main character, Nicholas Linnear, is the prototypical American who learns the secret arts, but it goes deep into the culture, and mysticism, and develops both the story, the characters, and escalates the action in a believable manner. There are some racy sex scenes in the books, as a warning, but even if that annoys you, it is worth skipping ahead to finish the book. The final showdown is amazing, and involves some not so… Read more »
I loved Naruto ever since my best buddy gave it to me! What a great read, so much fun :)
Hmmm, can I say The Octagon, I remember watching that on HBO when I was like 13. Plus Chuck Norris wins all the time.
Across The Nightingale Floor. The word “ninja” is never specifically said, but given that the setting is a fictional feudal Japan, the main character is totally a ninja. Definitely a different take on the genre, but a good one. If a rather depressing one.
Naruto is my favorite Ninja anime… Why cause it’s pretty bad ass lol and it’s something I grew up watching/ reading
Shinobi is my favorite ninja movie. So awesome and the characters were creepy. Ninja gaiden 2 was my favourite game, retro NES style.
