London-based tabletop publisher Modiphius Entertainment has announced an immediate suspension of all active development on Achtung! Cthulhu, its flagship in-house RPG setting. The decision brings a sudden halt to official products in the line, including the game’s ongoing Living Campaign, effective immediately.

The announcement, delivered just days before the UK tabletop industry gathers for the UK Games Expo in Birmingham, marks the end of an era for the publisher’s first home-grown intellectual property. Senior project and process manager Gavin Dady confirmed that the recently published hardback supplement, The Norway Projekt, serves as the final retail release for the current iteration of the line, concluding a catalogue that spans more than 50 individual products.
First launched in 2013 via a highly successful crowdfunding campaign by Modiphius co-founder Chris Birch, Achtung! Cthulhu mixed cosmic horror with an alternate-history narrative of the Second World War. The setting initially utilised third-party mechanics, including Savage Worlds and Call of Cthulhu, before being rebuilt from the ground up to spearhead Modiphius’s proprietary 2d20 system. Over the last decade, the corporate-led “Secret War” storyline has seen supplements covering battlefronts from North Africa to the icy landscapes of Scandinavia.
According to the publisher, internal resources are being redirected away from active line development because the core narrative has reached a logical conclusion. Leadership frames the hiatus as a transition period, passing the torch to independent writers through a planned restructure of their community content initiative.
Gavin Dady, Senior Project and Process Manager at Modiphius, said in a statement:
We’ve reached a point in the Secret War storyline where we feel the Achtung! Cthulhu line is in a good place. We want to let the community take the next steps on the journey with the World Builders Program, which is currently getting reworked (more news soon). As part of this, we will make a big bundle of Achtung! Cthulhu artwork available for World Builders creators to use in their new projects.”
Despite reassurances that all contracted freelance writers and artists, including illustrator Ariel Orea, have been paid in full for their contributions, the abrupt cancellation of the Living Campaign leaves several narratives unfinished and in limbo. The studio has not provided a definitive timeline for the relaunch of the World Builder’s Program, nor have they clarified how long physical stock of the existing 14 hardback books will remain available through retail distribution networks.
While the publisher insists this is not a permanent farewell, internal design resources in London are widely expected to shift toward high-profile licensed 2d20 lines. For the foreseeable future, the Secret War’s survival depends entirely on the upcoming community open gaming license guidelines.
