French independent publisher Studio Agate has launched the Kickstarter campaign for 7th Sea 3rd Edition, ushering in a new era for the iconic swashbuckling roleplaying game originally created by John Wick. Following their acquisition of the property from Chaosium, Studio Agate has already secured over £260,000 in funding from thousands of backers.
The new edition advances Théah’s timeline by a decade. Geopolitical balances have shifted, and new intrigues are rumbling beneath the surface. While the mechanics have been entirely overhauled, the studio has stated that all second-edition books will remain relevant as rich repositories of lore, locations, and characters for this new era.
Cinematic Action and Risk
To simulate the fast-paced, high-stakes nature of swashbuckling fiction, the developers have built a new system inspired by the classic Roll and Keep mechanics.
“In 7th Sea 3rd Edition, you’re not a nameless adventurer. You’re the main character in a swashbuckling movie! Your decisions can overturn conspiracies, topple sovereigns, prevent a war between two nations, seize an artifact from a secret society before it can gain power over a kingdom…”
The resolution system revolves around two colours of ten-sided dice. Players roll “action dice” to determine what their hero accomplishes and “wound dice” to measure what they suffer in the process. This division is specifically designed to encourage risk-taking and “success with style,” ensuring that bold, cinematic manoeuvres are mechanically rewarded rather than penalised.
Customising the Tone
Recognising that groups play with vastly different atmospheres, Studio Agate has introduced “Paths” to help Game Masters adjust the feel of their adventures.
- Path of the Goddess: Brings the supernatural to the forefront, highlighting sorcerers, deities, and extraordinary creatures.
- Path of Intrigue: Focuses on a darker, more mature atmosphere built around conspiracies and moral dilemmas.
- Path of Progress: Highlights a world in upheaval, where scientific innovations and ancient Syrneth artefacts take centre stage.
The game is currently in open development, with backers gaining immediate access to the Phase 3 Playtest documents to help refine the mechanics before they go to print.
