The Lavish Chateau is open for business, and the Ruby of the Sea is ready to perform.
In a move sure to delight Critters and musical theatre fans alike, Amazon Prime Video (specifically the AU & NZ accounts) has released a full musical clip from the newly launched animated series, The Mighty Nein. Titled “Who Will You Be?”, the video showcases a mesmerising performance by Marion Lavorre, the renowned courtesan of Nicodranas, while her daughter Jester gets up to mischief backstage.
The clip arrives just as the series debuts globally, offering a glimpse into the vibrant, occasionally chaotic world of Campaign 2.
The Ruby and the Little Sapphire
For those familiar with the Critical Role actual play, the scene is a nostalgic trip to the Menagerie Coast. Marion Lavorre, known professionally as the Ruby of the Sea, is captivating a packed house at the Lavish Chateau. The animation style, handled by Titmouse (the same studio behind The Legend of Vox Machina), brings the sultry, opulent atmosphere of the Chateau to life with rich reds and golds.
But it wouldn’t be a Jester origin story without a little bit of chaos. While her mother commands the spotlight, Jester is seen darting through the backstage area. True to her chaotic good nature, she’s not just watching; she’s helping stagehands and, it seems, setting up a few pranks for the evening’s less savoury guests.
The song itself, “Who Will You Be?”, serves as both a thematic anchor for the character of Marion and the title of the show’s second episode. It explores themes of identity, fantasy, and the masks people wear – fitting for a series about a group of misfits trying to find their place in a world on the brink of war.
From Tabletop to Screen

The Mighty Nein follows the success of The Legend of Vox Machina, continuing Critical Role’s partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. While Vox Machina was a classic high-fantasy epic of heroes growing into their legends, The Mighty Nein promises a grittier, more morally complex, and character-driven narrative. The group of adventurers includes a tiefling cleric (Jester), a dirty wizard (Caleb), a goblin rogue (Nott), and other beloved outcasts.
The release of a musical number highlights the production’s willingness to lean into the theatrical roots of its cast. The Critical Role team, composed entirely of veteran voice actors, has never shied away from a song at the table, and it appears the animated adaptation is following suit.
Where to Watch
The first batch of episodes for The Mighty Nein is streaming now. The series adapts the second campaign of the hit TTRPG show, but is designed to be accessible to newcomers who haven’t watched the hundreds of hours of original gameplay.
You can catch the series exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
