The classic Fighting Fantasy gamebook, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, is being reimagined as a cooperative board game by the German publisher Ulisses Games.
First published in 1982, the adventure by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone introduced millions to interactive fantasy and is now set to return to the tabletop for a new generation. The new board game will see players explore the deadly mountain together, working to overcome the warlock Zagor’s traps and monsters to claim his treasure.
Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Games Workshop and Fighting Fantasy, said in a statement;
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain gamebook introduced millions of people around the world to interactive fantasy adventures. This new board game brings the same thrilling excitement in a new format to a new generation of heroes – and will hopefully inspire players who once braved Firetop Mountain long ago to challenge the Warlock once again. May their STAMINA never fail!
The game, which will launch on the crowdfunding platform Gamefound in January 2026, is designed for solo play or for up to four players. Ulisses Games states the gameplay will be fast-paced, aiming to capture the tension and difficult choices of the original while adding more tactical combat and a shared party experience suitable for modern players.
The publisher has confirmed the game will feature a mix of original and new art, designed in the style of the famous gamebooks to evoke the dark humour and suspense of the classic adventures.
Jan Wagner, the game’s co-creator, explained in the press release;
This project is a celebration of the most popular classic adventure combined with modern board gaming. While the mechanics are state-of-the-art, the feeling of gameplay will take you right back to the legendary choose-your-own-adventure books. We hope long-time Fighting Fantasy fans and new players alike will enjoy exploring Firetop Mountain together and support us when it launches on Gamefound.
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain will be the first English-language title from Ulisses Games’ expanding international line. The company is well-known for publishing popular tabletop roleplaying games such as The Dark Eye, Torg Eternity, and Fading Suns.
