The digital adaptation of the colossal board game Frosthaven is set to receive its first major content update. Developer Snapshot Games and publisher Arc Games have announced that Awakening Protocol will arrive as a free update for the Early Access title on Steam and the Epic Games Store on October 23rd.
The update introduces a significant amount of new material to the tactical roleplaying game, headlined by a new narrative arc. The Unfettered Storyline challenges players to confront a machine uprising that originated in the ruins of an ancient civilisation. Leading this mechanical vengeance is a mysterious and formidable new leader.
To tackle this new threat, Awakening Protocol adds three new playable hero classes to the game’s roster, promising to reshape battlefield strategies. The update also brings a host of other additions, including:
- Five new bosses described as mechanical and unknown horrors.
- More than 18 new quests that open up new areas to explore.
- Over 40 new items, including tools, weapons, and gear.
- A new Town Hall building for the settlement, which comes with eight potential upgrades.
- A Challenge system, offering unique objectives with added risk and reward.
- Job Postings, which function as side quests issued from the new Town Hall.
Frosthaven is the digital version of the wildly successful tabletop game from designer Isaac Childres and Cephalofair Games. The board game is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Gloomhaven and holds the record for the most-funded board game in Kickstarter’s history. The digital version is being developed by Snapshot Games, a studio led by Julian Gollop, the celebrated creator of the original X-COM series.
Coinciding with the update’s launch, Frosthaven: Awakening Protocol will be playable at SPIEL Essen 2025, which runs from October 23rd to 26th. Attendees can visit the Cephalofair Games booth to try the new content and meet members of the development team, including Game Director Hristo Petkov.
