Dark Horse Comics is set to launch Synthetics Volume 1, a new four-issue comic mini-series, in October 2025, bringing together a remarkable creative team to explore a dying Earth and the true meaning of humanity. This original, creator-owned series promises to blend genres within a dystopian sci-fi epic.

The series boasts an impressive roster of talent, including J. Michael Straczynski, celebrated for his work on Babylon 5 and his significant contributions to Marvel and DC Comics. He’s joined by artist Tony Parker (Medusa, Mass Effect: Foundation), colourist Carrie Strachan (Hellblazer, Smallville: Season 11), and letterer Steve Dutro (Plants vs Zombies, Cthulhu Cat). Together, they invite readers to delve into a scenario where the definition of life itself is as crucial as its meaning.
Straczynski offered a glimpse into the philosophical heart of Synthetics, noting,
The question most often asked in speculative fiction, but which is really at the heart of all storytelling, is: what does it mean to be human? In our story, for the first time, synthetic humans have been created in order to save the human race from its own mistakes, and the ripple effect touches all of our characters: police, scientists, the press, the rich and powerful and all parts in-between. The ultimate question is, can the synthetics help us survive, and can we allow them to survive?”
Artist Tony Parker expressed his excitement for the Dark Horse project, stating,
I was excited to work with J. Michael Straczynski, and once I read the script, I became elated. This work is a thing of beauty, and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
In Synthetics Volume 1, Earth faces its demise, plagued by expanding dead zones. Humanity responds with “rage gangs” or retreats into a “cyber-void.” The final hope for civilisation rests with a new kind of human – synthetics. The series will explore whether these beings will be accepted or met with destruction, posing them as potential angels, devils, or a modern iteration of Frankenstein’s monster.
