Undead in Scandinavian folklore
I’ve not asked Dunderdagar about their name, but it makes me think of Draugr. These undead warriors aren’t just Skyrim; they’re from Scandinavian folklore.
There are others, or at least other names for Draugr, and perhaps descriptions of Draugr which might be considered ‘type’.
- Draugr: This is perhaps the most well-known term, referring to a reanimated corpse with immense strength and malevolent intentions. They often dwell in burial mounds, guarding their treasures and attacking those who disturb their rest.
- Aptrgangr: This term translates to “after-goer” or “one who walks after death,” essentially synonymous with draugr.
- Haugbui: These are mound-dwellers, undead beings who reside within their burial mounds. Unlike draugr, they are less likely to roam far from their resting place.
- Helblár: This term describes the dark blue or black colour often associated with the undead, signifying their connection to death and decay.
- Nár-fölr: This term translates to “corpse-pale,” further emphasizing the ghastly appearance of the undead.
