What’s the difference between corsairs and pirates?
While the terms “corsair” and “pirate” are often used interchangeably, there’s a critical distinction:
- Pirates are individuals who engage in robbery or criminal violence at sea. They operate without any legal authority and are typically motivated by personal gain. Think of Blackbeard or Captain Jack Sparrow – they’re classic pirates.
- Corsairs: These were essentially state-sanctioned pirates. They were private individuals or ships granted permission (through “letters of marque”) by a government to attack and plunder enemy ships during wartime. They were legal privateers, operating with the backing of a nation. Famous examples include Sir Francis Drake (for England) and Hayreddin Barbarossa (for the Ottoman Empire).
