Jamie Lee Curtis’s graphic novel Mother Nature is a visceral and unflinching depiction of the dangers of the climate crisis.
The story follows Nova Terrell, a young woman out for vengeance after her father is killed by Cobalt Corporation, a company drilling for oil in her hometown.
It’s Lee Curtis’ debut graphic novel, adapted from a film script written by the horror icon herself and Russell Goldman.
Nova’s quest leads her to learn the truth about Cobalt Corporation’s “Mother Nature Project,” a clean-water-providing initiative that has awakened an angry force threatening to destroy them all.
The comic is beautifully illustrated by Karl Stevens, who uses a painterly style to create a sense of dread and foreboding. It was Stevens who adapted the film script to the comic book format.
The story is well-written, although it takes a slow and steady pace at times despite semi-frequent scenes of gore. The solid characters and a suspenseful plot build towards the uncertain climax. Curtis’s passion for environmentalism is evident throughout the book, and she does not shy away from depicting the horrors that climate change can unleash.
Mother Nature is a powerful and timely graphic novel that will leave a lasting impression. It is a must-read for anyone concerned about our planet’s future.
There’s an afterwards from Healer of the Water Monster author Brian Lee Young, who sees their own culture, the Dine, in the art and story and approves of the appointment of Dine scholar Jeremiah Watchman to guide that usage.
