A new tabletop RPG supplement called Creation Myths by gothHoblin will allow you to flesh out your tabletop RPG characters like never before – and it has us excited here at Geek Native.
Creating a character for any tabletop RPG can be quite an in-depth, involved and – usually – fun experience.
I for one can easily spend hours building my characters, choosing from the different combinations of races, classes and attributes (for example, my last character was a Tabaxi Warlock called ‘Mungojerrie at Tenagra’ who made a pact with The Great Old One).
However, it’s often the case that a lot less thought is given to the characters’ personalities and backstory – making them almost seem like an afterthought, or something that evolves depending on how the gameplay goes.
If you find creating backstories for your characters a bit of a chore, or a slog, then this supplement could well be a great addition to your RPG arsenal – and it’s available to buy from DriveThruRPG for only $10.
Introducing Creation Myths
So, how does Creation Myths work? Well, you’re given a series of prompts to help you really explore your character and their motivations. You’ll be guided through a total of 12 sections – each with its own set of prompts – so you come away with a fully fleshed-out character. And they’re ready to rock!
Thinking that sounds like a hecka lotta questions and even more of a chore than just quickly typing something up? I’m with you there – and the good news is that you don’t have to answer every question.
You can make it fun by rolling for random questions to answer, or if you’re a control freak like me, you can just pick and choose what you need.
Also, not all questions are created equal; some are straightforward, and others are far more in-depth, requiring you to keep a note of whatever you come up with.
Works for existing characters, too
If you’ve been reading this thinking that it sounds all very well and good, but you’re in the middle of a campaign right now and this would have been more helpful a few months back – think again!
You can actually use it to further develop your existing characters, if you want to give them a bit of extra love now you’re also developed their skill levels.
It could also be a useful tool for DMs when deciding on big bads, or for the NPCs you sometimes run into during gameplay for your characters to interact with. So many possibilities! And it works for pretty much most gaming systems, so, in other words, not just Dungeons & Dragons 5e.
If you think all this sounds worth $10, you can buy a PDF copy of Creation Myths from DriveThruRPG right now.
I think this idea is utterly inspired, and a great investment if, like me, you plan on playing many more tabletop RPGs in future.
In fact, I’m going to download my own copy right now!
It does make you wonder why something like this hasn’t been done before now, considering how many people struggle with developing their characters.
