Minneapolis-based indie publisher Fight in a Box has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Barkane, a beginner-friendly roleplaying game designed to be played alongside a real-world canine companion. Designed by Seppy Yoon, the project aims to transform the mundane routine of walking the dog into a guided narrative experience.
The campaign is currently live and seeking funding to bring the spiral-bound action journal to print.
As the tabletop industry continues to experiment with solo and journaling formats, Barkane introduces an unpredictable physical element to the mechanics. Instead of relying purely on dice rolls or prompt tables, players must physically follow the cues and decisions of their “wizard doggo” to progress the narrative through ten distinct walking quests.
Questing With Your Dog
Fight in a Box has been crafting board games since 2013 and is known for incorporating humour and storytelling into their designs. Barkane leans heavily into this pedigree, offering a lightweight system that can be played on the move.
The physical edition of the game is appropriately spiral-bound, making it easy to fold back and hold in one hand while managing a leash in the other. As players embark on their daily walks, the journal provides prompts, action checks, and story beats that react to the dog’s real-world behaviour and pathing choices.
