Dougie B is back in the game.
Less than a month after stepping down as President of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser has resurfaced with a significant new role in the tabletop industry. This week, Hasbro announced that Bowser has been appointed to its Board of Directors, effective immediately.

He is joined by Carla Vernón, CEO of The Honest Company, as the toy and game giant looks to bolster its leadership with heavyweights from the worlds of digital entertainment and consumer brands.
From Switch to Strategy
For the Geek Native audience, Bowser’s move is more than just corporate musical chairs; it signals Hasbro’s continued aggressive pivot towards digital gaming.
Bowser retired from Nintendo on New Year’s Eve, closing a chapter that saw him steward the company through the colossal success of the Switch and the recent launch of its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. His tenure was defined by maintaining momentum in a volatile hardware market – expertise that Hasbro is likely keen to tap into as it leans heavily on its digital portfolio.
Hasbro is no longer just a toy company; it is the owner of Wizards of the Coast, and by extension, Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. These two properties are currently the company’s financial engines, driving revenue through digital clients like MTG Arena and licensed video games such as the blockbuster Baldur’s Gate 3.
Rich Stoddart, Chair of Hasbro’s Board, said in a statement that the new appointees bring “extensive leadership experience across consumer brands and franchise management,” noting that their guidance would be key to executing Hasbro’s long-term innovation strategy.
A Digital Future for Tabletop?
The appointment aligns with Hasbro’s “Blueprint 2.0” or “Playing to Win” strategy, which focuses on fewer, bigger brands and digital expansion. Bowser’s experience at Electronic Arts prior to Nintendo, combined with his leadership during Nintendo’s hybrid-console era, places him at the intersection of physical play and digital ecosystems – exactly where Dungeons & Dragons is currently awkwardly positioned.
Chris Cocks, Hasbro’s CEO and himself a former Wizards of the Coast president, welcomed the expertise. He told press that the new directors’ leadership would be “invaluable” as the company aims to deliver “extraordinary play experiences” worldwide.
For sceptics in the hobby, this reinforces the fear, or hope, depending on your view, that the future of D&D and Magic lies increasingly on screens rather than kitchen tables.
The Honest Connection
Joining Bowser is Carla Vernón, the CEO of The Honest Company. While her background lies in lifestyle and consumer packaged goods rather than goblin slaying, her expertise in brand trust and transformation is notable. Hasbro has faced significant community trust issues in recent years, particularly following the Open Game License (OGL) controversy and multiple rounds of layoffs. Vernón’s experience in managing a brand built entirely on “honesty” and consumer trust could be a calculated move to repair those bridges.
As is standard for high-level board appointments, both Bowser and Vernón will stand for election by shareholders at the 2026 Annual Meeting.
