Infinite Black, the publisher behind the thematic Elder Dice and the splatterpunk sci-fi (previously) Vast Grimm, has been forced to halt the launch of its next major project, Nocturnus: Journey to the Tree of Sorrows. The delay follows the discovery that a massive amount of the company’s inventory was moved and sold without its knowledge or authorisation.
In a candid video update, company founder David LaRocca explained that the upcoming Kickstarter campaign, which was scheduled to begin on 3 February 2026, must be postponed indefinitely. The studio is currently prioritising its legal recovery and operational stability after discovering its products were appearing on third-party marketplaces and retail shelves without permission.
Unauthorised Distribution and Retail Leaks
The situation came to light when David LaRocca began investigating significant discrepancies in the company’s stock and shipping records. His findings revealed that a substantial portion of Infinite Black’s inventory had been removed from its intended supply chain.
The impact of this unauthorised distribution is already being felt in the wider market. According to the update, items that should have been under company control have been spotted on auction websites and in physical retail locations.
David LaRocca, founder of Infinite Black, said in a statement:
A massive amount of our inventory was moved and sold without our knowledge or authorisation. To see our artwork being sold in this way is heartbreaking to me as an artist and as a creator.”
While the financial implications are severe, the studio has emphasised the emotional toll on a team that treats its roleplaying accessories as high-end art rather than simple commodities. The scale of the loss has been described as a potential “knockout blow” for the boutique publisher.
Nocturnus Retreats into the Shadows
The primary victim of this crisis is the Nocturnus roleplaying game. Breaking away from the current market saturation of 5e-compatible supplements, Nocturnus was designed as a standalone experience powered by the proprietary Eclipse D20 System.
The game is set in the world of Solum, a realm gripped by an encroaching twilight in which the sun is fading. Players take on the roles of Harbingers, individuals marked by cosmic forces and drawn toward the mysterious Tree of Sorrows. The mechanics focus heavily on tension and psychological horror through the Causata system, which tracks the mental and physical corruption of characters as they wield forbidden “Void energies.”
Infinite Black’s shift toward an original system represented a major strategic move to diversify its portfolio. For now, the “Sentinel”, the group of players bound by fate in the game, must wait as the company focuses on its own survival.
A Focus on Recovery
Despite the magnitude of the unauthorised stock removal, the studio is attempting to maintain an optimistic outlook. The decision to postpone the Kickstarter is a protective measure designed to ensure the project eventually receives the launch it deserves.
The community has already begun to rally behind the creators. Fans looking to support the studio during this period can still find their existing library on DriveThruRPG or browse their thematic accessories at the Infinite Black store.
No new date has been set for the Nocturnus campaign, as the investigation into the unauthorised sales continues.
