A popular roleplaying game inspired by Studio Ghibli and The Legend of Zelda is returning to Kickstarter this month with a new book and an in-world board game.

Obojima: Tales From The Tall Grass, from publisher 1985 Games, was a breakout success when it first funded in 2023, earning over $2 million from more than 23,000 backers. The campaign setting for 5e is now being updated for the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, with a new Kickstarter campaign launching in September 2025 to fund additions to the range.
The new campaign will introduce Tales From Yatamon, a 130+ page sourcebook detailing the largest city in the world of Obojima. The book promises new subclasses, spells, backgrounds, monsters, and magic items for players to use in the winding city streets.
Also new to the Kickstarter is Yanari: The Witch’s Market, a board game set in the city of Yatamon. In the game, 2 to 4 players take on the roles of witches in a race to brew potions for customers. Designed to be easy to learn, a typical game is expected to last between 30 and 50 minutes.

Alongside the new content, the campaign will fund a fresh printing of the core setting book, Obojima: Tales From The Tall Grass. This version will feature a new layout and brand-new art, incorporating the updated 2024 D&D mechanics, including a new Monster Disposition Mechanic.
Jeremiah Crofton, Creative Director of 1985 Games, said in a statement,
Obojima is an exciting dive into a D&D setting unlike any other. It explores familiar tones and themes from other loved genres, and mashes them with fantasy tropes in a way you’ll be hard pressed to find in other D&D books. It’s truly a new way to experience D&D, and I couldn’t be more proud of it.”

The creative team includes notable former Wizards of the Coast designers. Adam Lee, who worked on Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, and Ari Levitch, whose credits include The Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen, have both contributed to the world of Obojima.
The original Obojima setting book is currently available for pre-order ahead of the new campaign’s launch.
