The new Demon Slayer film has shattered records, claiming the title for the highest-grossing opening weekend for an anime film in the UK and Ireland.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, a joint release from Crunchyroll, Aniplex, and Sony Pictures, brought in an impressive £3.4 million during its opening weekend. The film launched on the 12th of September across nearly 500 cinemas, including IMAX and other premium formats. It achieved the highest per-screen average of any film during that period, taking in an average of £7,000 per screen.
This film is the first instalment of a planned three-part cinematic trilogy that continues the story from the popular anime series. As Geek Native’s review noted, the movie is a dramatic and emotional ride, and fans should ‘prepare for deaths’.
The Demon Slayer franchise, based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotoge, has become a global phenomenon. The story of Tanjiro Kamado’s quest to save his sister has been adapted into several anime seasons and feature films, all animated by the celebrated studio ufotable. Previous seasons of the anime are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
In other anime news for the UK, the schedule for this year’s Scotland Loves Anime festival has now been announced, with events planned for Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London.
