Gamers heading to Tabletop Scotland this weekend will have the chance to preview the sinister roleplaying game, Beyond the Veil, as developer Wrenegade Studios offers free playtest slots.

The TTRPG, which I might describe as a blend of The Twilight Zone meets Twin Peaks, is a collaborative and creepy game of supernatural investigation. Earlier this year, Dan likened it to The X-Files meets The Haunting of Hill House, setting a clear tone for the unsettling experiences the game aims to deliver.
While fans await the game’s Kickstarter, Wrenegade has confirmed the crowdfunding campaign is not expected until next year. To bridge the gap, the studio is taking a generous approach to content. In addition to the substantial free prologue PDF already available, Wrenegade plans to release a full and free “Investigation” online. This free adventure is slated to be a significant offering of two to three dozen pages, forming part of the core rulebook if the Kickstarter is successful.
For those in Scotland, the most immediate opportunity to experience the game is at the Royal Highland Centre. Wrenegade Studios can be found at stand H20 in the Highland Hall, and they have made playtest sessions available to book for free through Eventbrite. These sessions offer a direct chance to see how the collaborative rules handle the spooky and mysterious atmosphere.

A chunky prologue for Beyond the Veil was released in May and is still available as a free download from the Wrenegade Studios website. This quickstart is extensive enough to provide a solid introduction to the game’s world and mechanics.
