The swashbuckling TTRPG 7th Sea is changing hands once again, with publisher Chaosium announcing that Studio Agate will take over all future development for the world of Théah.

The French publisher is no stranger to the game of swords and sorcery, having managed the French-language version of 7th Sea since 2017. More recently, they successfully launched the first official English-language campaign for the game, a move that likely solidified their position as worthy successors.
This transfer marks the latest chapter in the popular RPG’s journey. As Geek Native reported in 2019, Chaosium acquired the rights to 7th Sea from its creator, John Wick, whose company, John Wick Presents, had faced financial difficulties despite a record-breaking Kickstarter. That deal saw Wick join Chaosium as the line editor for the game he envisioned. However, John Wick later parted ways with the Call of Cthulhu publisher in 2023, leaving the future of the line in question.
Now, that future seems to be in the hands of a dedicated team at Agate. Rick Meints, President of Chaosium, commented on the transfer in a press statement:
Studio Agate has been delivering exceptional work on the French version of 7th Sea since 2017 and last year successfully launched the first official 7th Sea campaign for the English language market. We are confident that they are the perfect team to carry forward the legacy of this epic universe.”
Studio Agate’s first move is to connect directly with the game’s established and passionate community. They have launched a community survey to gather ideas and feedback, which will help shape the game’s direction. This initiative comes as the studio prepares a Kickstarter for the next chapter in the 7th Sea saga.
Nely Hann, President of Studio Agate, noted the studio’s enthusiasm for the project:
7th Sea is a fascinating world, and it is an honor for us to carry the torch and continue its development. We have many exciting plans to involve the community in shaping the future of 7th Sea!”
To foster community involvement, Studio Agate has also launched a new Patreon, which will serve as a “developer diary.” The platform will provide behind-the-scenes insights into the development process and will be available for free to all fans to follow. It will also be the place where results from the current survey and any future ones are shared. For those who wish to offer financial support, a donation option will be available, which includes getting one’s name credited in all upcoming books.
