A tabletop roleplaying game published earlier this year, Adventuring Family, aims to be both a therapeutic tool and a family-friendly, no-prep adventure system suitable for children as young as four.

The game, subtitled A Family Therapy Role Playing Game, has been designed with inclusivity as a core principle. It seeks to provide an engaging experience for children, including those with ADHD, Asperger’s, and other social or emotional challenges, by fostering teamwork, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence.
We’ve a preview of the game to share below.
The use of roleplaying games in therapeutic or educational settings is a growing field that Geek Native has watched with interest. As reported by Geek Native, many gamers find TTRPGs help with their mental health, and projects that formalise this benefit are becoming more common, moving beyond the traditional dungeon crawl to provide safe spaces for exploring complex emotions.
The designer of Adventuring Family, Nikolaos Kyriakoudis, brings two decades of experience in teaching empathy and soft skills to the project. In creating the game, he collaborated with a pediatric clinical psychologist. The other, Radu-Georgian Gosa, is a clinical pediatric psychologist and psychotherapist.

Nikolaos Kyriakoudis told Geek Native that Adventuring Family is designed to tackle “real-world family challenges like divorce, grief, and tricky social situations through fantasy adventures.”
A significant draw for busy parents and carers will be the focus on being easy to run. The game is presented as being tailor-made for beginner Game Masters who have little or no time to prepare. It provides a complete fantasy world and easy-to-follow rules and tutorials. Crucially, the gameplay is non-violent, encouraging imagination and creativity through interactive elements that can be used with or without dice, helping to keep younger players engaged.

There’s also an educational component, with the designers suggesting that gameplay can seamlessly blend in elements of economics, mathematics, history, and even school homework, transforming learning into part of the adventure. It’s intended to act as a supportive platform for families, aiming to develop social skills and create a positive atmosphere through quality time. A dedicated illustrator, Elisavet Giagtzoglou, has brought the vibrant world to life to capture the imagination of young players. Youngsters should find a character they can see themselves in with this diverse set of NPCs and iconic heroes.
