Apparently it was an off-the-chain perfume ad by Kenzo that convinced Hideo Kojima to hire Margaret Qualley to play the role of Mama in Death Stranding.
The ad, from 2016, was directed by Spike Jonze and is 3:14 of Qualley being completely unhinged, but in a pretty epic way, with Qualley contorting her face and body and getting up to all sorts of mischief in sync to Mutant Brain by Sam Spiegel (Jonze’s brother).
Kojima was won over. Sharing on X, he said: “Saw this and offered her the role.” Apparently, one person replied with: “That’s probably the least surprising thing I’ve seen you say.”
There’s a lot of impressive physical performance in the video, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t severely impressed. Check out the full video here:
Regarding where Qualley stands in the world of Death Stranding, at present we don’t know much about that. Qualley also had the role of Mama’s identical twin, Lockne, which means she could come back in Death Stranding 2 – or we could even see her on our screens in the highly anticipated Death Stranding movie.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
